Early Orthodontic Treatment for a Lifetime of Smiles

When Should My Child First Visit the Orthodontist?

The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends that children have their first orthodontic screening by age 7. This early evaluation allows Dr. Christopher Gregoire to determine if and when treatment may be needed. Many local dentists are trained to recognize orthodontic concerns early and may refer your child to our office even before age 7 if necessary.

Why Evaluate Children at Such an Early Age?

Early diagnosis and treatment offer many advantages, including:

  • Guiding emerging teeth into better positions
  • Preserving space for permanent teeth
  • Reducing the risk of injury to protruding front teeth

If treatment is necessary, Dr. Gregoire can help:

  • Shape jaw growth and dental arch width
  • Prevent the need for permanent tooth extractions
  • Reduce the chance of impacted permanent teeth
  • Address thumb-sucking habits
  • Improve swallowing and speech issues

Early orthodontic care can simplify future treatment and help ensure a healthy, well-aligned smile.

Does Every Child Benefit from Early Treatment?

Not all children require early orthodontic intervention. Some issues are best addressed during adolescence when all permanent teeth have erupted. In certain cases, skeletal orthodontic concerns should be treated later in a child’s growth.

That’s why Dr. Gregoire creates a customized treatment plan for every patient. If immediate treatment isn’t necessary, your child will be placed in our Orthodontic Supervisory Program for ongoing monitoring.

What is the Orthodontic Supervisory Program?

This complimentary program helps us track your child’s dental development. If necessary, we may recommend early removal of baby teeth to guide proper alignment. Patients are typically seen every 6–8 months to evaluate their progress. We’ll also keep your family dentist informed of any updates or recommendations.

Benefits of Orthodontic Treatment

Orthodontic care isn’t just about aesthetics—it also:

  • Improves bite function
  • Makes teeth easier to clean
  • Prevents premature wear and tear
  • Enhances long-term dental health

Will Early Treatment Prevent the Need for Braces as a Teen?

Early treatment can correct significant issues, prevent more severe problems, and simplify future care. However, because all permanent teeth have not yet erupted, additional treatment (Phase II – full braces) may still be needed during adolescence. In some cases, no further orthodontic treatment is required.

Does My Child Still Need Regular Dental Checkups?

Absolutely! Maintaining excellent oral hygiene is essential during orthodontic care. We recommend visiting your family dentist every six months for routine cleanings and checkups to ensure your child’s teeth and gums stay healthy throughout treatment.
