Emergency Orthodontic Care When You Need It Most

Orthodontic treatment is a journey toward a healthier smile, but occasionally, you may experience an issue that requires immediate attention. Whether it’s an appliance malfunction or a direct injury to your mouth, we’re here to help.

Emergencies related to orthodontic appliances typically fall into two categories: those related to the orthodontic appliances themselves and injuries to the mouth or teeth.

Emergencies Related to Orthodontic Appliances

Occasionally, your orthodontic appliances may become damaged or loosened during treatment. In these cases, it’s important to stay calm and contact our office for assistance. Please note that emergencies cannot be handled on a walk-in basis; however, we will make every effort to accommodate you during patient hours.

Here are a few tips for addressing common orthodontic appliance issues until you can visit us:

  • Irritating Tie Wire – If a tie wire is causing discomfort, cover it with beeswax or gently tuck it under the archwire with a blunt object like a pencil eraser or Q-tip.
  • Loose Band or Bracket – A loose band or bracket can typically be left in place until your appointment. Contact us during patient hours to schedule an appointment to reattach it.
  • Broken or Poking Archwire – A broken or poking archwire can often be bent back into place with a pencil eraser or cut with nail clippers. If the problem persists or feels unresolved, give us a call during patient hours.

Direct Injuries to the Mouth and Teeth

If you sustain a direct injury to your mouth or teeth—whether or not you’re undergoing orthodontic treatment—it’s important to take immediate action:

  • Apply Ice – Immediately ice the affected area to reduce swelling and discomfort.
  • Contact Your Dentist – For injuries like displaced, knocked-out, or fractured teeth, contact your regular dentist as soon as possible. X-rays are typically needed to assess the extent of the injury.
  • Dislodged or Displaced Appliances – If your orthodontic appliances are displaced due to the injury, we will help you replace or adjust them once you have seen your family dentist and are comfortable.

After Office Hours

Orthodontic emergencies may occur outside of office hours, and if you experience pain or discomfort, please contact our office. We will provide instructions on who to contact for immediate assistance or provide further guidance until you can be seen during regular office hours.
