Frequently Asked Questions about Orthodontics

Is there a fee for the initial consultation?

No, we offer a complimentary consultation as a courtesy to you and your family dentist. During this visit, we’ll discuss the possibilities for braces or tooth alignment without any charges.

At what age should children first visit for an evaluation?

Typically, we suggest evaluating young patients once the 6-year molars have erupted and the front permanent teeth start to appear, usually between the ages of 6 and 8. The American Association of Orthodontics recommends that children have their first orthodontic check-up by the age of 7.

Why do you recommend evaluations for young children?

The goal of early evaluation is not always to begin treatment right away but to monitor and inform. Early visits help identify potential future orthodontic needs and allow us to begin treatment early in certain cases. We assess habits, discuss medical concerns, and develop an observation schedule until treatment becomes necessary.

How long will the initial consultation take?

The first visit usually lasts between 30 minutes and an hour. Depending on the patient’s condition, we may perform a visual exam, take X-rays, or complete diagnostic records, such as impressions of the teeth and photographs.

Do you accept patients transferring from other cities?

Yes, we welcome patients who are transferring from another location. We gather diagnostic records to understand their current situation and create a treatment plan to complete the care that has already begun.

Do you treat adult patients?

Absolutely! A growing number of our patients are adults. In fact, 1 in 4 orthodontic patients are adults, according to the American Association of Orthodontics. With the advent of cosmetic appliances, adult treatment has become much more comfortable and convenient.

What’s the difference between an orthodontist and a dentist?

An orthodontist is a dentist who has completed an additional 2-3 years of specialized training in orthodontics, gaining expertise in the art and science of teeth alignment and jaw positioning.

Can I schedule all my appointments after school or late in the day?

We offer some flexibility with appointment times to accommodate school and work schedules. However, for certain procedures that require longer treatment times, we may need to schedule during regular office hours between 9 AM and 3 PM. We’ll do our best to fit appointments into your schedule.

Do you treat orthodontic emergencies?

Yes, we do! Our emergency care information is available on our website. Feel free to contact us in case of an emergency for guidance and assistance.

Are payment options available?

Yes, we offer flexible payment plans for orthodontic services, which can be adjusted based on your treatment plan. We will work with you to make your payments as convenient as possible.

How do you handle insurance?

Once we verify your insurance coverage, we will work directly with your carrier to bill and collect payments. Please note that if your coverage changes or is discontinued, you will still be responsible for the agreed-upon fees.

Do you accept American Express, MasterCard, or Visa?

Yes, we accept all major credit cards.

Do you offer direct debit options?

Yes, we have arrangements for direct debit payments, credit card transactions, and online payments for your convenience.

Is interest charged on payments?

No, we do not charge interest on our payment plans.

Do you offer family discounts?

Yes, we offer special pricing and payment programs for families with multiple patients.

Do I need to take my pre-medication for orthodontic appointments?

Yes, if you require pre-medication for dental appointments, you should continue taking it for your orthodontic visits as well.

Do retainers need to be worn after braces?

Yes, retainers are typically worn full-time for about 6 months following braces treatment and then worn at night indefinitely. We will go over the retainer schedule during your post-treatment care.

Why do teeth shift after wearing braces or Invisalign?

Teeth can shift naturally over time, even after braces or Invisalign have been removed. This is a normal part of aging. That’s why wearing retainers is essential to maintain your orthodontic results for a lifetime.
