Orthodontic Retainers for Long-Lasting Straight Smiles

The benefits of orthodontic treatment are lasting, and wearing your retainers is key to preserving your results. We encourage you to wear them as instructed so your smile remains beautiful and straight for years to come. After completing your orthodontic treatment, there are important responsibilities for maintaining your results, which are outlined below.

The Importance of Wearing Retainers

Once the active orthodontic appliances (such as braces) are removed, you will receive retainers to stabilize your teeth. After braces are removed, the bone and soft tissues around your teeth need time to stabilize. This process can take several months. It’s crucial to wear your retainers as instructed, as failure to do so could result in your teeth shifting, possibly requiring re-treatment.

Types of Orthodontic Retainers

Removable Retainers

Because teeth can shift over time, it’s essential to wear retainers as much as possible for one year after braces are removed. After this period, you can switch to wearing the retainer just at night. This helps to protect your smile while allowing your wisdom teeth to develop without disrupting your orthodontic results.

During this time, Dr. Christopher Gregoire will monitor your progress with regular checkups every six to nine months, and X-rays will be taken approximately every 18 months. Once your wisdom teeth are evaluated, wearing your retainer at least one night per week is essential to prevent your teeth from moving as you age.

A traditional retainer made of acrylic and stainless steel wires, offering a durable option for long-term use.

Clear Retainer

This retainer is made of clear plastic and is similar in appearance to clear aligners, providing a more discreet option.

How to Care for Your Removable Retainers

Proper care will ensure your retainers last and maintain their function:

  • Clean regularly: Clean your retainer before and after placing it in your mouth. Plaque can build up on the surfaces, so gently scrub with a toothbrush and mild liquid soap. For thorough cleaning, use a denture cleaning solution, such as Efferdent, to remove plaque and tartar. Always rinse retainers thoroughly to remove any cleanser residue.
  • Avoid heat: Retainers are sensitive to excessive heat, so keep them away from heaters, dishwashers, car dashboards, or any place where temperatures exceed 115°F.
  • Store properly: Always store your retainer in its case when not in use to protect it from damage. Keep it away from pets, as they may chew on it.
  • Replacement: Over time, retainers may need to be replaced. Your original treatment contract includes one set of retainers. If lost or damaged due to neglect, there will be a charge for a replacement. If your retainer becomes loose or breaks, contact our office immediately.

Fixed Retainers (Bonded Wire)

A fixed retainer is a wire bonded behind your teeth to maintain alignment long-term. It should remain in place permanently unless your family dentist notices it causing gum or bone issues. In such cases, have the wire removed and replace it with a removable retainer as prescribed by Dr. Gregoire. Be sure to have the fixed retainer monitored during your regular six-month dental checkups.
